This morning at the Revitalization consultation, "Pentecost and the New Humanity" we were led in worship by two leaders of a church in Ecuador. The language of the service was in Spanish (with translation into English) and involved physical movement all the participants...dancing and hugging, among other physical activities. Just imagine: world class scholars, indigenous church leaders, representatives from many ecclesial bodies taking part together in Latin dance whilst worshiping the Lord!
What struck me, more than just what I was witnessing and experiencing, was the beauty of the integration of mission and worship and the originality of lyrics and composition in the music this morning. All the songs were written by the worship leader. The song that stood out to me was the one that put the specific vision of their church into music. Their mission: 1. To expose the corruption of the surrounding society; 2. To establish a new society (the church) founded upon the new birth; and 3. To redeem the lost...the oppressed from the corrupt society around them.
When was the last time you have seen the serious mission of the church, working for justice in your neighbourhood and world, integrated into the worship of God?
